The Cowhorn Trails Story

Generations at Work

The original eighty acres of Cowhorn was purchased in 1886 by Henry and Georgia McGee. Shortly thereafter Georgia and Henry built their home close to the pond on the site behind the barn. The house was also close to Hwy 10, which in the late 1800's was a road bed covered in a few rocks and grass. You might find the highway if you look carefully for a long running mound that lays in the direction from northwest to southeast on the property. Frank McGee, son of Georgia and Henry, moved into the once thriving railroad town of Pheba but ran cattle on Cowhorn. Calling this place "Cowhorn" came about when young Buddy, Frank's son, needed a way to identify where he and his father were going and one day he found a cow's horn on the ground. The name Cowhorn has born and it has been called that since the 1940's. After Frank's death in 1953, Cowhorn was mainly used by local hunter and fishermen. The 1960's saw another generation with renewed interest for this place when Buddy, once again, ran cattle and horses here. After he married Mildred, they began to buy conjoining acreage. Since they traveled the United States with the Corp. of Engineers, Buddy began to plant pastures in trees. The 1980's and 90's was a time of change for Cowhorn, more trees were planted and more acreage was added by yet another generation. Linda and Evelyn brought renewed interest in the care of the tree farm and the life long love of horses. Plus the fifth generation of McGee family was born to Linda and Darren Wade.

Cowhorn's fifth generation was showing as great a love of horses and horseback riding as the third and fourth. By late 1990s Cowhorn was now a well cared for tree farm with wide fire lanes and beautiful canopies making wide shaded trails for horseback riding. While Mother Nature is making horse and wagon trails Evelyn began traveling to trail rides all over Mississippi and Alabama. Much talk was going on about forming Cowhorn Trails so that many others could enjoy the trails, camping and wildlife. So in 2004 the McGee-Wade Family did just that and as they say "the rest is history".
